Appointment reminders fail in two ways: they never get seen, or they never get acted on. The channel you choose decides which failure you risk. SMS gets opened almost every time but carries little detail. Email can carry everything but gets opened far less. Neither is right for everything.
This is a practical question, not a marketing debate. The right channel depends on what the reminder has to do: confirm, inform, or convince. Each of those is a different job.
SMS wins when the job is simple and time-sensitive: appointment confirmations, day-before reminders, arrival windows, one-tap reschedules. The message is short, the action is obvious, and the customer sees it within minutes. For most service businesses, reminders that ask for a yes or a reschedule belong on SMS.
SMS also wins for no-show recovery. A missed appointment followed by a same-day text gets a response that an email next week will not. The catch is consent: customers have to opt in, and every message must feel worth the interruption.
Email wins when there is something to read: directions to the job site, a quote attached, instructions to prepare, a recap after the visit. Email gives you room to explain and gives the customer something to search for later. Nobody searches their text messages for the invoice terms.
Email also wins for anything that needs a paper trail: confirmations of scope, pricing changes, cancellation policies. The inbox is where business records live.
In practice, the strongest reminder systems use both: SMS for the nudge, email for the detail. The text says see you tomorrow at two, reply to confirm, and the email carries the paperwork. Each does what it is best at, and the customer gets reminded twice without being annoyed twice.
