How General Contractors Automate Subcontractor Updates

Oct 9, 2026 · 5 min read · BoostCab team

Ask a general contractor where the day goes and a big chunk of the answer is phone tag. Calling the electrician to confirm Thursday. Texting the drywall crew about the schedule change. Chasing the plumber who was supposed to send photos. None of it builds anything, but all of it has to happen or the job falls behind.

Subcontractor coordination is pure overhead. It is necessary, repetitive, and almost entirely made of the same five questions asked over and over. That makes it one of the best automation candidates in construction, and one of the least automated.

The five questions you keep asking

Every GC asks the same things: Are you still on schedule for your start date? Did the scope change? Do you need anything from us before you mobilize? Who is your on-site contact? Can you confirm you received the updated plans? These are check-in questions, not judgment calls, which means a system can ask them.

Automated check-ins go out on a schedule tied to the project timeline. Subs reply by text or a simple form. Their answers land in one place where the project manager can see every trade's status at a glance. The phone calls that remain are the exceptions, not the routine.

Paper trails prevent disputes

There is a second benefit that matters as much as the time saved. When schedule confirmations, scope acknowledgments, and change notices live in a system instead of scattered texts, disputes get shorter. Everyone can see what was agreed and when. That paper trail has saved more than one GC from an expensive argument.

None of this replaces the relationships. The best GCs still walk the job and know their subs by name. Automation just clears away the repetitive chasing so those relationships get the attention instead of the admin.
